Whetstones – Enjoy the Finest Method of Sharpening Your Knife

Using a whetstone to sharpen a knife is the most effective method of sharpening knives. Whilst there are many different ways to sharpen, edge and hone knives, the best results will be achieved through using a whetstone.

The name whetstones originated from “whetting”, which was the word used to describe the process of sharpening. The process of using a whetstone is the method usually utilised by factories and workshops where knives are crafted.

Handling and using these sharpening stones can take some getting used to, but once you have the hang of it, you will not look back. Whetstones will sharpen your knife to a degree which other methods cannot. Using a whetstone provides more control over the sharpening in comparison to other methods, and they shed the least amount of metal too.

Crafting Your Knife With a Whetstone

Sharpening knives with whetstones is an immersive experience which invokes a sense of craftmanship. You will begin to understand and discern the specific features and characteristics of your knives, and this can help you to slice your food more effectively. Using a whetstone will also provide you with the opportunity to sharpen your knife in your own style, which will give your knife a unique edge.

The Importance of Grain Size

When choosing a whetstone, you will need to take grain size into consideration. The grain size you need will depend on the condition of your knife. Generally, whetstones ranging from 120 to 400 grit are a good option for dull blades and for removing chips along the edge of a knife. If your knife is still relatively sharp, you can choose a higher grit, ranging from around 700 to 2000. Whetstones with a grain of 1000 and above are typically only used for honing and maintaining the sharp edges of the knife and are not suitable for dull knives.
